The World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (WFCMS) was founded in Beijing on September 25, 2003 with the joint efforts of the organizations of Chinese medicine in different countries and full support of the Chinese government. At the inaugural meeting of WFCMS, representatives of 118 Chinese medicine societies from 37 countries and regions put forward the proposal to develop international standard for the terminology of Chinese medicine. According to the proposal, WFCMS secretariat has organized specialists from different countries to work out the Scheme for International Standard of Chinese-English Terminology of Chinese Medicine. WFCMS has convened three international meetings for developing the International Standard Nomenclature (ISN) since 2003. About 200 specialists from 67 countries (regions) and 66 academic institutions of Chinese medicine have participated in the development and revision of ISN draft. From April 7 - 8, 2007, the Fourth Session of the First Council Board of WFCMS was held in Guangzhou, China to approve the International Standard Basic Chinese-English Nomenclature of Chinese Medicine. After discussion and vote, the standardized nomenclature was approved by the WFCMS Council Board and recommended as an international standard for 174 WFCMS member societies in 55 countries (regions). The publication of this standard is only the first step towards the standardization of the terminology of Chinese medicine and is scheduled to revise once every five years.
