Recommendation for 2026 International Award for Contribution to Chinese Medicine- Achievement Award in Medical Science Begins

In order to fully mobilize the enthusiasm and creativity of Chinese medicine practitioners worldwide in the field of Chinese medicine technology, enhance academic exchanges among academic groups of Chinese medicine in various countries and regions, improve the academic level of Chinese medicine, and make greater contributions to human health, the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies (hereinafter referred to as the "WFCMS") established the International Award for Contribution to Chinese Medicine in 2011, with the registration and approval of the National Science and Technology Award Office of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. As a highly influential international award of Chinese medicine, its whole review and awarding procedure is undertaken by WFCMS.
The "International Award for Contribution to Chinese Medicine - Achievement Award in Medical Science" is a sub-award of the "International Award for Contribution to Chinese Medicine ". The main reward is given to individuals and organizations that have achieved significant scientific and technological results in basic research, clinical research, and technological development of Chinese medicine, made important progress and breakthroughs in promoting the scientific and technological advancement of Chinese medicine, and provided important scientific and technological support for the dissemination and development of Chinese medicine in various countries around the world. The reward cycle is once every two years. As of now, the "International Award for Contribution to Chinese Medicine - Achievement Award in Medical Science" has been successfully awarded for five times, with a total of 75 experts and their teams were rewarded. In order to do a good job in recommending the candidate projects of the "International Award for Contribution to Chinese Medicine – Achievement Award in Medical Science " in 2026, the relevant matters are hereby notified as follows:
1. Essential requirements for the achievement recommended
(1) The recommended candidate's representative scientific and technological achievements should be the results of cooperative scientific research and technological development conducted with institutions outside Chinese mainland (including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan); or the recommended candidate’s representative scientific and technological achievements completed in China, which have achieved good transformation and application in overseas regions, and resulting in significant economic or social benefits; or the recommended candidate should be a person from outside Chinese mainland, including those without Chinese nationality, overseas Chinese, and Chinese citizens from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.
(2) Major scientific and technological achievements in basic research, applied research, and development research in Chinese medicine, especially various practical scientific and technological achievements of the recommended candidates should be those completed before December 31, 2023.
(3) The representative scientific and technological achievements of the recommended candidates should have significant implications and driving effects on the international development of Chinese medicine.
(4)Candidates from Chinese Mainland and their representative scientific and technological achievements shall, in principle, have won provincial-level or above government science and technology awards, or second-class or above awards from registered social science and technology awards.

Units or individuals with recommendation qualification are as follows:
Each recommending unit/individual is responsible for the recommendation of candidate projects, and the recommendation materials will primarily serve as the preliminary review stage for the award.

1. Essential requirements for the achievement recommended
During the recommendation stage for the "Science and Technology Progress Award", the primary contributor of the relevant scientific and technological achievements shall be recommended as the candidate. These achievements shall simultaneously meet the following requirements:
(1) The recommended candidate's representative scientific and technological achievements should be the results of cooperative scientific research and technological development conducted with institutions outside Chinese mainland (including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan); or the recommended candidate’s representative scientific and technological achievements completed in China, which have achieved good transformation and application in overseas regions, and resulting in significant economic or social benefits; or the recommended candidate should be a person from outside Chinese mainland, including those without Chinese nationality, overseas Chinese, and Chinese citizens from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.

2. Recommendation rules
Recommendation is adopted by Achievement Award in Medical Science committee. Units or individuals with recommendation qualifications can choose the best qualified candidate based on the recommendation scope. Candidates who do not meet the criteria outlined in Section 4 of the Essential requirements - i.e., those who have not previously received relevant awards - must be recommended by three qualified nominators.
Units or individuals with recommendation qualification are as follows:
(1) Units
① Member units and branches of World Federation of WFCMS;
② International Collaborating Center for Chinese Medicine Clinical Research of WFCMS;
③Higher education institutions, scientific research institutions, medical institutions, and Chinese medicine-related first-level associations at the provincial level and above in Chinese Mainland;
④Higher education institutions, scientific research institutions, and Chinese medicine-related international academic organizations outside Chinese Mainland;
⑤Administrative departments of Chinese medicine or science and technology at the provincial level and above in Chinese Mainland;
⑥Chinese embassies and consulates overseas or foreign embassies and consulates in China;
⑦Chinese medicine-related magazines, publishing houses worldwide.
(2) Individuals
① Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences or Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering;
② National Master of Chinese Medicine;
③ Chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of the WFCMS and WFAS councils;
④ The first recipient of the second prize or above of the China National Science and Technology Progress Award;
⑤ The first recipient of the award-winning projects in previous International Award for Contribution to Chinese Medicine- Achievement Award in Medical Science;
⑥ Editor in chief of Science Citation Index (SCI) Magazine;
⑦ The person in charge of research institutions related to Chinese medicine outside of China mainland.
Each recommending unit/individual is responsible for the recommendation of candidate projects, and the recommendation materials will primarily serve as the preliminary review stage for the award.
3. Requirements for recommendation materials
(1) Requirements for recommendation form
① Recommendation unit or individual shall strictly examine the authenticity and reliability of materials based on the principle of objectiveness and fairness. Besides, the official seal of recommendation unit or name of recommendation individual should be stamped or signed on written materials.
② Recommendation form should be concise and to the point, highlighting the international collaborative research team of the recommended candidate, the technological progressiveness of relevant scientific and technological achievements, as well as the importance and promotion of the international development of Chinese medicine, providing authentic and reliable recommendation information.
③ Unit with recommendation qualification may recommend internal employee as candidate, but individual with recommendation qualification cannot recommend himself/herself.
(2) Requirements for recommendation material submission
The recommendation materials include both electronic and hardcopy versions.
Please send the electronic version of the recommendation materials to the email address: wfcms_award@vip.163.com, naming it as "2026 + International Award for Contribution to Chinese Medicine - Achievement Award in Medical Science - Candidate Name".The content should include:
① Word version of the recommendation letter (without seals/signatures and attachments);
② Combined PDF version of the recommendation letter (including seals/signatures and attachments).
Simultaneously, submit one bound copy of the recommendation letter (including seal/signature and attachments) to the Office of the “International Award for Contribution to Chinese Medicine - Achievement Award in Medical Science” at the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies.
(3) Application Time
Electronic materials online submission CLOSED: March 31, 2026.
Hardcopy materials submission CLOSED: March 31, 2026 (based on the date of mailing). Late submissions will not be accepted.
4. Review Arrangement
The review will be organized by grouping experts based on the candidate's country and region, as well as the professional field of their representative scientific and technological achievements. The review will focus on the role of the candidate's representative scientific and technological achievements in promoting the international development of Chinese medicine, as well as the progress and breakthroughs achieved in the scientific and technological advancement of Chinese medicine. The review is divided into two stages: the preliminary review stage focuses on evaluating the recommended materials, and after the preliminary review is completed, candidates who are notified to proceed to the second review stage will be required to submit review materials. The second review stage is further divided into two stages: correspondence review and meeting review. The projects to be awarded will be selected through expert meeting review. After public disclosure without objection, a formal award decision will be made. No more than three first-prize projects and no more than fifteen second-prize projects will be awarded. WFCMS will grant honorary certificates to the awarded projects and issue bonuses.
